This project is about how to make classical literature more available for a younger audience. I have redesigned the covers of five different classic books, that together form a fantasy classic-collection / starter pack. This series is meant to be an introduction for younger people to the world of classics. The series ranges from well-known books, to some lesser known and is arranged in an easy to hard reading order. The focus of this design was to make the covers more available to hopefully interest readers between 20-25 years old. By using less “exclusive” tools, like designing the books as soft-covers, I’ve tried to make something that appeals to a new audience and is somewhat more modern in shape and form.

The finished books are bound in a softcover format (19.8cm x 12.8cm). They’re printed with folds of 16 pages and bound with both bookbinding glue and sowing thread (saddle stitch). The design is somewhat abstracted and illustrated by me. All the books are identified by their own signature color, which is repeated throughout the different materials I’ve made for the exhibit. The typography used is “Carta Marina” for all titles, and “Oswald” for author names and information about the books. On the spines of the books you can find an illustrated icon that represents the content of the books, and which contributes to the series-feeling.
