Queen of Glass
I took on this project as a fun tribute to the author Sarah J. Maas. She has written three different series including “Throne of Glass”, all of which I am a fan off. Before “Throne of Glass” became a series however, Maas had published a different version of the books called “Queen of Glass” on a fanfiction site called Fictionpress. When the books became published by Bloomsbury this fanfiction was taken down, but as with all things on the internet, it was saved by fans. When I was sent a copy of “Queen of Glass” I knew I had to have a physical copy with my other books, and being a designer I thought why not make my own? And that’s how this project came to be.
To start off this project I knew I wanted the book to match with the “TOG” books I already owned, and these were designed by Greg Heinimann and illustrated by Jim Tierney. I did some research Jim Tierneys style of illustration so that I could illustrate something similar. I ended up illustrating in procreate and finishing with typography and layout in InDesign. I am quite happy with how it turned out.
I also did the formatting of the inside of the book. When I got the PDF of the book, it was the standard layout of something that had been copied straight off a website, aka not good. I created a layout in InDesign and tried to match the style the other books had been published in. In this PDF the formatting for italics had been messed up when transferred into InDesign with a new font and I went through the entire book manually to correct this.
When I was finished with the design part I got the book printed via Lulu books and finally had this finished copy to put in my bookshelf!
